There are a few Alaska TV providers.  In addition to Dish Network and Direct TV, Alaska has one main cable provider.  Alaska cable is provided by GCI in most parts of the state (where cable is available.)  GCI provides cable services in both the Anchorage and Fairbanks areas.  GCI is the only Anchorage cable provider, which makes it a popular TV provider choice.  Fairbanks cable options are limited to GCI cable as well.  GCI Cable is not available in every part of Alaska.  In Alaska, satellite TV remains the most readily available tv provider option throughout the state.  Dish Network, DirecTV, and GCI cable packages include local Alaska TV stations like KTUU and KTVA.  Direct TV internet packages may also be available.  In Alaska, satellite internet is a popular choice, especially in remote locations.

 

Alaska TV Providers – Bad weather issue?

Many people wonder how the weather in Alaska might affect satellite TV reception.  This is a valid question, as rumors abound that bad weather will cause a loss of satellite reception.  In some cases, this may be true.  The only time that a satellite should lose reception is when something completely blocks the line of sight from the satellite way up in the sky to the little satellite dish on your house.  When dealing with bad weather, satellite users have to consider the fact that snow may accumulate on the dish.  When snow completely covers the dish, satellite reception may be interrupted.  This problem has a very simple solution – if you can reach your satellite dish with your hand or a broom you can brush the snow off and your reception will be instantly restored.  Satellite TV is still a great option, even in bad weather environments.
