Fast Ethernet Switches Explained

When anyone thinks of networking or connections between a lot of computers, Ethernet emerges as the most accepted and regarded as the networking topology base for the same. Ethernet adapters include connections formed using wires that ultimately end up in a switch or hub.

Hubs are used to finish the electric connection among pcs on a network whereas switches act as traffic controlling agents that make the network better efficient. An Ethernet card can act in two modes: full duplex and half duplex. Fast Ethernet switches enable Ethernet cards to operate in the more effective full duplex mode whereby you can send and receive data simultaneously.

There is an additional benefit: a fast Ethernet switch helps straight data routing among ports instead of distributing and routing traffic across all ports. This is also labeled micro segmentation, where two PCs can transfer data between each other without interfering with the activities of the other computer systems on the network.

When you’ve a greatly crowded network where data and files are transferred each second, speedy Ethernet switches and their performance makes a large difference in how your network works. A 10/100 fast Ethernet switch has eight wires coming into them, out of which four are used for data. For reasons of safety from electrical instability and interference, the other four cables are wound around the data lines.

Cables that run in the Ethernet network are found in various grades: CAT5 for 100mbps speeds and CAT5e/CAT6 for speeds ranging from 200 m bps till 1 g bps. Wiring schemes for these cables also differ. With Crossover cables, two computer systems could be connected with each other without any hub or a switch. When there is an existence of a hub or a switch in the network, patch cabling technique is used.

fast Ethernet switches are now found in an interface that makes it possible to connect different categories of networks. However, speedy Ethernet technology still remains the most convenient and easy to use of them all.
